SECOND DAY 9 OCTOBER 2014

OVERVIEW BY ABANG MUAMMAR GHADDAFI

In the morning we had Andy on English Language Class on Tourism. We learned quite a lot on tourism effects and how it affects the society, environment and economy. The next class was on Communication skills across the curriculum by Ms Katie. The focus was on how to communicate in the curricular subjects. The last session of the second day is on Materials selection and adaptation activity types and it was facilitated by Bill Bowler. We learned how to use pictures in the language lesson using the content from the student's course book. We were exposed to an activity like a Caroll Diagram: to classify information according of two different sets. Another activity is called 'Hot seat': a communicative activity whereby the person who sits on the hot seat need to guess the word behind him or her.

The materials selection process is important for English teachers to choose the right and proper material for the language class. Getting the proper material means we can enhance the usage of the material for teaching an English class by making 'differentiation' as one of the approaches of CLIL.

1ST SESSION -LESSON OVERVIEW BY CHE HASNISYAHIDA

It was an English Language Lesson by our home trainer Mr Andres Steele on Tourism. We were allowed to experience the lesson from two perspective; the students eyes and the teacher overview.

Warmer/ Set Induction
To active students schemata, the teacher asked the students to discuss in small groups on exciting tourism in your area and what are the positive and negative impact does the tourism or the tourists bring to the locals.

Dictation activity

The students were numbered A B C, they were assigned task to note down different text read by the teacher. There were four statements given. This activity is helpful for students to improve their listening and writing skills (in terms of spelling and punctuation). Then, they moved to a group consisted all A B C members to share what they have read and matched all the statements to form a complete short passage.

In this activity, differentiation learning was applied. The statements read by the teacher have different difficulty area. Students were also given word list to help in their dictation. In this activity, two words given on the board were

effect ---------- usually a NOUN
affect ---------- usually a VERB

Moreover, when the students were asked to sit in the group of A B C, the students were actually helping and assisting each other because their level of language ability is mixed.

Homework and the rationale
Some questions to ponder upon before we supply students with homework:
  1. What are the rationale of the homework given?
  2. What are the level of support should i give as the teacher?
